PowerDown Cloud Optimizer
Welcome to PowerDown, the cloud optimizer that lowers your cloud costs by up to 80%. PowerDown transparently migrates workloads onto cost effective Spot servers and automatically powers down idle resources.

Wasting up to 80% of Cloud Spend?
The convenience and flexibility of cloud computing is compelling, but it can quickly become complex and expensive as your organization grows. There are ways to reduce your cloud cost, but these usually involve extra complexity, additional steps or operational restrictions.
There are two primary drivers of cloud cost and waste:
- Not using the best compute instance and not using Spot servers
- Running idle resources when they are not required
Compute Spot market servers are typically up to 80% cheaper than regular On-Demand servers, but they come with limitations such as termination with little warning and restrictions on how they are used in Auto Scale Groups. So while Spot instances have great promise, they are not as widely used for general computing as they could otherwise be.
Cloud providers charge for resources on a per-second basis even if they are idle and many resources are not required 24x7 and are only required for a small percentage of time. While it is possible to manually turn off idle resources, doing so consistently for a team has too much overhead. Consequently, many cloud resources are left powered up when they are actually not needed.
PowerDown addresses overcomes limitations and addresses the two primary drivers of cloud waste.
How Does PowerDown Save?
Organizations can save up to 80% on their cloud spend by using the PowerDown cloud optimizer. PowerDown addresses these two drivers of cloud costs by transparently migrating workloads onto cost effective Spot servers and by automatically powering down idle resources when they are not required.
PowerDown augments the standard Auto Scale group capability by transparently migrating workloads from On-Demand servers onto Spot instances and saves up to 80% off the cost of the server. PowerDown enables you to specify the percentage of Spot and On-Demand servers you want in your Auto Scale groups. PowerDown then transparently and without downtime, migrates your workloads to the desired Spot instances.
Powering Down Idle Resources
Cloud providers charge for the time you have resources powered up. This is typically charged by the second. During a normal work week, development, staging and test resources may be used only 40-60 hours out of a total of 168 hours. If those resources are powered down, you can realize savings of up to 70%.
PowerDown automates the powering down of idle and unused cloud resources. PowerDown has a global scheduler that combines the competing needs of all users to create a unified schedule for your cloud resources. Using that schedule, it powers down servers, databases and containers when they are not required and automatically restarts them when necessary.
What is Unique about PowerDown?
Transparent Spot Replacement
PowerDown augments the existing Auto Scale capabilities offered by your cloud provider. The standard Auto Scale offerings of cloud providers creates server instances and monitors the group. PowerDown will then create Spot instances and migrate workloads from the On-Demand instances until your desired Spot instances percentage is reached. This solution enables the best of Auto Scale and the freedom to use Spot instances without additional configuration or management.
PowerDown provides an intuitive resource list so that users can easily see where cloud resources are used. From the resource list, PowerDown enables teams to easily manage entire cloud environments. PowerDown will also give you insight and highlight whether a resource is best suited to the task and why a resource is powered up. i.e. who has requested that a resource be on at a particular time.
DevOps environments typically contain many servers, databases, load balancers and containers. PowerDown unifies the presentation of these resources in context so you can see from one view how your cloud is structured.
From the resource list you can power up or down, or attach a schedule to a complete environment such as "test" or "staging".
Modern DevOps teams are often geographically dispersed and work overlapping and differing work hours. Some work from home, some in other cities, and some in different time zones. PowerDown integrates these competing user needs and determines precisely if a resource is required or not. PowerDown combines all user schedules and automatically determines the resource schedule that will satisfy all users and minimize your cloud spend. PowerDown makes it easy for users to simply configure their cloud resource access requirements.
PowerDown for Dispersed Teams
PowerDown easily supports geographically dispersed teams in different time zones. Users do not need to coordinate — they simply specify their own resource needs. PowerDown will support multiple teams, cloud credentials, cloud providers and cloud resources shared among different teams.
